Like many other silent films, The Story of the Kelly Gang was made with silver nitrate film reels, which deteriorate quickly and are easily flammable. It was not properly stored, and up until the 1970s, all that remained were stills and promotional pamphlets. In 1976 and 1978, some fragments were found and confirmed to be from the film.
